RAK     Marrakesh Menara Airport, Marrakesh, Morocco

We had a wonderful time on our 10 day tour of Morocco but it was super busy so in some respects we were happy to be at Marrakesh airport for our final few days at Barcelona. We loved Marrakesh and would be happy to visit again, but the bus trip down through the High Atlas Mountains was a highlight.

I can’t resist a floral display, even in Duty Free.

I was obviously impressed by the architecture of the airport as I took several photos – it’s quite spectacular. Having said that, this was my comment on Facebook that day:

Photo comment..or camera comment. I’ve really missed my Galaxy phone and will be getting that (or an iPhone) ASAP when we get home. For some time I was using Peter’s phone which is disappointing despite its Leica lens. Last few days I’ve swapped to the iPad.

The Nikon may have reached the end of its tether. The sandblasting on top of the dunes has jammed the flash shut. Still isn’t 100% from the Maasai Mara sand a few years back. I’m tempted to give up on the SLR and get a good quality point and shoot.

Photos taken around the Marrakesh Airport. There seems to be more time to indulge in photography once you’ve passed through the departure procedures.

When we arrived at Barcelona, we did enjoy being back in the big smoke:

It’s the little things: being able to drink from the tap water, clean your teeth without bottled water, and being able to flush the toilet paper. And I had only one squat toilet experience. Happy days! #1stworldproblems

HBA     Hobart Airport, Tasmania, Australia

Despite flying into and from Hobart as recently as December 2023, I have virtually no memory of details. Maybe we were just so excited to get on with our holiday we just didn’t pay attention. Similarly with 1995, plenty around the South East but no flying photos.

CBR     Canberra Airport, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

I have flown into Canberra quite a few times but it always seems too unprepossessing to be the airport for our nation’s capital. It’s always frustrating too, to be flying in lower-capacity aircraft and having had to connect through Sydney. Which reminds me, that Canberra is one place where my luggage and I were separated, having to be delivered later. While one trip was for work, others have been to visit family, and more often to do research for my family history and attend conferences like Shamrock in the Bush or the AFFHO Conference in 2015.

One of my favourite places in Canberra: the National Library of Australia. A source of wonders.

  1. I can see why you were impressed with the architecture of Marrakech Airport. I think probably the most impressive airport I have been in is Changi. I always enjoy being at airports and looking out the windows at the aircraft coming and going and being attended to on the tarmac.

  2. I tend not to take photos in airports. I’ll be looking more closely at the architecture now that you have alerted me.

I have one R airport on my visited list. REP is Siem Reap that was a diversion on the way home from one of our European jaunts. We spent an enjoyable but hot few days there visiting temples and Tong Le Sap. Of the airport I have few memories.

    1. I suspect we’ve also become more cautious with airport photos due to security. I think it’s often funny or interesting ads that catch my eye.

Siam Rep would have been interesting to visit. Would be great to see some photos another time.

  3. Oh no! I lost my comment again. One minute I had a long expose on Canberra airport and now it’s gone. What I said was in 1975 I arrived at a school just as Year 6 were about to head off to Canberra by aeroplane! How exciting to go with them, for free! I don’t remember the airport but still recall sitting with the children in (old) Parliament House watching Gough Whitlam performing in front of a disinterested Opposition. The children were astonished at the bad manners displayed by both sides. We went boating on the lake and visited the War Memorial. I can’t remember much else except I wore a denim midi skirt with matching jacket which aroused great interest from the year 6 girls. My son lives in Canberra so we go there often but never by plane. However he uses the airport a number of times a year so will ask him if he has noticed any significant architectural features 😀

    1. Sorry you lost your comment -it’s been happening to me too. Wow, you were lucky to get on the trip free. Our grandchildren in Darwin seem to do a Canberra trip in year 6 before going to Middle School.
I think many of us are disapproving if behaviour in Parliament! I was at the AWM one time when school kids were being very disrespectful which their teachers were ignoring. Being a bossy boots I had to remind them it was a place for respect.
It would be interesting to know if your son can think of architectural features in D
      CBR.

  4. Marrakech airport does look impressive. The airport that I like to have a long lay-over in is Dubai. There’s so much to see and do there. I’ve been to Hobart airport many times but like you it hasn’t been memorable. It’s usually just the gateway to many great Tasmanian holidays.

    1. I think a lot of places we just don’t notice as we’re focused on the fun ahead 🙂 We did stay in Dubai once but haven’t bothered since – we tend not do do stopovers en route, getting all the “pain” done at once.
